SOP’s or Standard Operating Procedures
are used to assure the quality and consistency of a service and ensure that
good practice is followed all the time. SOP is one of the key elements for
robust pharmacy governance system in the UK. The pharmacy contractual paper
ensures customers get what they want as per the prescription and also the
delivered items are safe to use and manufactured using quality materials.
From 1st
January 2005, the Royal Pharmaceutical Society made it mandatory for all pharmacies
in UK and Wales to have in place written SOP’s
for dispensing related activities.
Benefits of
SOPs are as follows:
- It helps assure the quality of the service offered by a pharmacy
- Ensures consistency and good practice at all times
- Help avoid confusion over roles and responsibilities
- Provide advice and guidance to substitutes and part-time staff
- Useful tools for training new members of staff
- Contribute to the audit process
It is the
responsibility of a pharmacist to make sure his or her staff has understood important
Standard Operating Procedures before working in the
pharmacy.
Usually there
are six functions that SOP is associated with which are prescription reception
SOP, pharmaceutical assessment SOP, prescription intervention and problem
solving - prescriber SOP, prescription intervention and problem solving -
patient SOP, labelling and assembly SOP, accuracy check SOP and prescription
transfer SOP.
